Is the Electronic Cigarette a Good Investment?

Electronic cigarettes, or e-cigarettes as they are sometimes known, are a fantastic new invention from China and the answer to smokers’ prayers!

This amazing little device looks, tastes and feels like the real thing and is being marketed as a healthier option to traditional cigarettes – and they can be smoked anywhere.

The question: Will buying one of these electronic devices be a good investment? How does the e-cig compare to the cost of traditional smoking? Health matters and the smoking ban aside, is this new product affordable for the average smoker?

Well, the short answer is yes. There are MANY different brands on the market today – 99% of which are manufactured in China. On the whole, the e cig market is very competitive but beware of really cheap products - you do get what you pay for. Watch out particularly for very small e-cigs – whilst they are neat-looking items, their battery life is very short between charges and the refills are not as cost effective as they hold a smaller quantity of e liquid and therefore need to be replaced more often.

There are some companies marketing extremely expensive electronic cigarettes – the majority of which are overpriced. The best advice for any new e smoker is to ask the company for the model number of the e cig (rather than the brand name) and then research this model on the many e-cig forums. The average price for an electronic cigarette starter kit is around $48 which will include everything you need to get started and a few nicotine refill cartridges. Bear in mind that as a 20-a-day smoker, you would spend around $45 on one week of smoking traditional cigarettes!

There are kits available for $85 to $185 that contain a higher number of refill cartridges (50 – 100 on average) and these are a good investment as the refills work out much cheaper this way.

As far as ongoing costs are concerned, the most obvious cost is replacement nicotine refill cartridges for your e-cig. One refill cartridge will last on average for approx 100 puffs (or 8-10 real cigarettes). So a 20-a-day smoker would be using approx 2 refills a day. The cost of reordering refill cartridges can range from $1.80 to $5 a refill depending upon the supplier. Even at the most expensive price, it is still much cheaper than smoking traditional cigarettes.

You do have other costs to take into consideration. Both the battery and atomizer are electronic cigarette components that need to be replaced periodically. If you are a heavy smoker, then the atomizer may need to be replaced around every couple of months. Batteries generally last much longer. The older the battery is, the more often it will need to be charged as it will hold a charge for a shorter length of time as it ages. When you consider how much you are saving on smoking, these ongoing costs are minimal.

Is the electronic cigarette a good investment? Yes. E-cigs are an excellent short- or long-term investment for the smoker.
